Every token picks one of four shrines when Layer 2 is added. That shrine sets the visual language for the token's remaining layers. The shrines are not teams competing for a pool. They are four classical vanitas themes carried forward as visual identities.

How Shrine Upgrades Work

1. Mint begins at Layer 1

Every token starts as the base skull alone. Nothing is assigned yet. The object is reduced to its first stable state.

2. The first added layer chooses the shrine

The first upgrade is the decisive one. When Layer 2 is added, the token enters one of four shrine routes: tempus, labor, gloria, or corpus. That choice becomes the token's visual law.

3. Later layers cannot switch routes

Layer 3 and Layer 4 stay inside the same shrine. They do not replace the token's path. They thicken it, corrupt it further, and move the token toward its completed state.

4. Depth changes both the artwork and the access

Upgrading is not only cosmetic. A deeper token is a fuller work and also earns better next-collection terms, with Layer 4 reaching the top tier and the artist gift.
